Once upon a time, all our data (music, video, picture files) used to be kept on our miniscule computer hard discs and even smaller 700mb CD's.
Then came the DVD-CD's of 4.7Gigabyte and made the huge CD collection smaller, after everything was moved and burned onto DVD's.
Then, external USB storage devices came and helped out. The great thing about these was that you was external, so it can be carried (unlike the Computer's hard disc). And it was safer (it wouldn't get scratched and stop working, so nothing was lost, with a little care).
Eventualy, the external hard discs came. This was the ultimate storage device as far as im concerned. Over time they have grown from a couple of hundred gigabytes to terrabytes and serve a great purpose for carrying around and backing up massive amounts of information. All they require are a little care, don't spill anything on them, don't knock them around or hit them. They last for years.
Anyway, this is my take on Data Storage Evolution. The way i've seen it.
Nowadays the CD's and DVD's are almost extinct for me. Everything is stored on external hard discs. I am the proud owner of 3 of them :p
The First one i bought years ago and we've been through a lot together. A small 300GB one.
The Second one i bought a year and a half ago. It's a 700GB one.
The third one i bought 6 months ago. A 1TB hard disc.
Anyway, as i got larger hard discs i eventualy transfered everything on them and my small hard disc was left in the closet, empty. Yesterday i took it out because the 1TB hard disc is getting kinda full, so i wanted to drop some data from the large one, onto the smaller one. I started the transfering, little by little, ten by ten gigabytes. And in the process i realized my small and oldest hard disc is failing!! :(
It's making weird clicking noises. It's jamming up my entire computer at times. The transfering of files, even though its happening is extremely slow. If i try to cancel a transfer the whole thing get's stuck and unless i disconect the hard disc it takes it literally over an hour to actualy finish canceling the transfer. If i disconect the hard disc and try to re-connect it with my computer, it won't work. Then i have to turn the power to the hard disc off, then on again, to be able to connect it to my computer again.
Anyway, after reading a little and losing some data (thanks god i realized what's happening quickly enough, could have lost a lot of stuff had i haden't realized the failing) i realized my hard disc is on it's last brinks of life. It's dying...
It's a sad day. I know it's not good to be tied to things and the whole consumer mentality thing, but i got love for that hard disc, my first one, we've been through a lot together.
So this post is to honor my hard disc before i bury it (throw it away :p )
And for you guys reading this, if you notice your hard discs behaving like mine is like i described above, be aware that it could be on life-support and make sure to test it or just backup your data on another hard disc, just to be on the safe-side and not lose any valuable pieces of information.
