Let me begin by saying that i am no Twitter expert. I just know the basics, stuff i learned in the previous few weeks by playing around mostly. I didn't put too much time into it though. So i can only give you a basic mini tutorial.
Basicaly, when you create your profile, and you have no picture, no header, the classig background, your profile looks like s... You need to spice it up and personalize it a little. So i will try to give a detailed explanation of how to do some basic personalization. I will share what i know and did, more or less.

I will teach you how to edit 3 things.
1. Photo
2. Header
3. Design
First of all let me show you what's what, look at the following screenshots.
Now you know what is what. Photo, Header and Design! (Design is the whole background, left and right)
Next you will click on the WHEEL, and then on Edit Profile. You will be taken to the next page, as shown below.
1. The Photo: Try to use a photo with the same dimensions. For example 100X100 - 200X200 - 300X300, the closer the better... Because if the dimensions have a big difference you won't be able to fit the Photo as you want to fit it and you will have trouble. I mean i can do some editing with paint, so i fixed that little myLot photo, but it did take me some time because im not so experienced with editing pics... Again, another area i just know the basics... :)
2. The Header: Here just use the dimensions that twitter says there on the page. Or make sure to get the difference between the dimension as closest as possible to the difference on the twitter page example.
3: The Design: The Design you can see where to find it. Click on it and play around a little. There are a bunch of Templates and Colors and stuff. So play around a little and find the Design/Background you like. You can also put in your own template. But this is the basics mini tutorial, so i can't help you there. :)
